3 Common Career-Wrecking Stories We Tell Ourselves (and How Not to Derail Yourself) - Introvert Whisperer
Introvert Whisperer / 3 Common Career-Wrecking Stories We Tell Ourselves (and How Not to Derail Yourself) - Introvert Whisperer 3 Common Career-Wrecking Stories We Tell Ourselves (and How Not to Derail Yourself) Introverts arenât the only people to create stories about their behavior in order to rationalize it and make it âOK.â We all love rationalizations soooo much; we donât go a day without a few. The problem is that if we keep listening to these career-wrecking stories about whatâs going on in our career, we wonât get the pay and recognition we deserve. Are you mysteriously stalled out in your career? You might want to pay attention to some of these stories Iâve heard Introverts tell to see if they match up with you. I Donât Speak Up in Meetings Because Iâm Polite by Letting Others Talk Donât fool yourself. We were all taught manners; whether or not people are polite or courteous is another matter. If everyone took that point of view, no one would talk. You will be viewed as passive and not gain the respect needed to be supported for upward career growth. Solution: First, lose the story. Itâs simply not true. Second, yes itâs hard to make yourself speak up, but you need to. Consider simply injecting your opinion about the topic being discussed, even if that opinion has been offered up a dozen times. Itâs your opinion and it has as much value as anyone elseâs. My Industry Has Bad Management Because I Have a History of Not Getting Along with Management But I Get Along With Everyone Else The jokeâs on you for not developing strategic relationships with your management. You might not like to follow their direction, but guess what? Theyâre in charge. And until you are, itâs their opinion that will sway the direction of your career. Solution: If you can have good relationships with most people but not your management, that alone is an indicator that you have work to do. Spend time with your management. Figure out whatâs important to them and then deliver well. Then, communicate what youâre up to. Donât make your management pull things out of you about your stellar performance â" because they wonât. (Like this thought? Tweet it!) Office Politics Doesnât Affect Me So I Stay Out of the Fray and Focus on My Work. Wanna bet? You can choose to ignore the politics of your organization but it will impact you. A big part of your ability to get the support you need to make your star rise is how well you influence those around you at all levels. Politics happens anytime a group of people assembles. Itâs about who can make decisions, who can influence who along with rewards and punishment. Solution: Donât ignore who has influence other than management. These are good people to form alliances with. Every group has them. Itâs simply a person who has chosen to form relationships â" therefore gain support â" to advance their agenda. You can learn from this type of person as well as bask in the glow of their organizational pull. Go to top Have you been telling yourself one of these stories? Share your experiences in the comments! What is it Like to Attend Canisius College
What is it Like to Attend Canisius College The tutors behind Varsity Tutors are not just here to teachtheyre sharing their college experiences as well. Victoria lives in Buffalo and is a 2013 graduate of Canisius College. She holds a bachelors degree in biology and specializes in algebra tutoring, anatomy tutoring, and biology tutoring. Check out what Victoria had to say about her time at Canisius College: Describe the campus setting and transportation options at Canisius College. Victoria: Canisius College is located in the city of Buffalo, New York. Throughout my years in Buffalo, I have had the pleasure of watching the city transform into a great place for young adults to live. The campus is located on Buffalos subway line, which extends downtown through a restaurant and nightlife scene, all the way to the waterfront where the Buffalo Sabres play at First Niagara Center. How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants? Victoria: I personally had a wonderful experience with Canisius Colleges faculty and staff, as the student-to-faculty ratio is kept close to 9:1. Teaching assistants are available to help students in labs, but nearly every course is taught by a professor. I felt as if both the professors and the support staff bent over backwards to assist me in all ways possible. How would you describe the dorm liferooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? Victoria: I lived on campus for three years, and I thoroughly enjoyed the housing options. In comparison to most schools, Canisius College has spacious, clean, and comfortable choices. The majority of the campus is connected by underground tunnels, which makes it easy to get from the library to your dorm to the dining hall without having to go outside in the winter months. Which majors/programs are best represented and supported at Canisius College? Victoria: Canisius College has a wide range of programs, with strong science, business, and education programs. I chose to study biology, as I wished to attend dental school, and after almost earning my D.D.S., I can attest to the fact that Canisius College prepared me extremely well for graduate school. Canisius College also has an extremely strong accounting program, and it offers graduate courses in a variety of fields. How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Victoria: With less than 3,000 undergraduate students, it is easy to assimilate and become comfortable when living on the Canisius College campus. Greek life is not a huge component of social life, but students often become very close with people within their majors, as well as people who live close to them in campus housing. How helpful is the Career Centerand other student support services? Victoria: The career center is a fabulous tool. If you are interested in the sciences, they provide great resources for mock interviews and resume building. My friends in the business school had great job offers right after graduation, and the network of successful Canisius College alumni in the Western New York area give great opportunities to recent graduates. How are the various study areas such aslibraries, the student union, and dorm lounges? Victoria: The Canisius College library was my home away from home, and I actually chose to continue to study there throughout my graduate school career. A Tim Hortons (local coffee shop) was added to campus a few years before I attended, transforming the first floor of the library into a fun social environment. The second floor is designated for quiet study, and the basement offers various group rooms for group projects and activities. There are other study areas throughout campus, and finding a favorite spot never proved difficult. Describe the surrounding town. Victoria: One of my favorite parts of attending Canisius College was getting to know the city of Buffalo. Buffalo has phenomenal restaurants, unique neighborhoods, and friendly people. Elmwood Village and Allentown offer a more hipster vibe, with boutiques, coffee shops, quirky bars, ethnic cuisine, and plenty of annual events. Canalside is the recently renovated waterfront, which includes tons of free fitness classes, concerts, a bike trail, and beautiful views. Chippewa Street is the nightlife district, which is open until 4:00 A.M. The city continues to grow and thrive, making it a fabulous place to live. How big or small is the student body at Canisius College? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Victoria: The student body is relatively small compared to most colleges. Coming from a small high school, I was pleased with the typical class sizes, which generally ranged from 18 to 24. Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one youregretthe most. Victoria: My favorite professor taught organic chemistry, and volunteered to be the faculty member for a club that my friends and I started and funded. As Canisius College Endurance Athletes, the school sponsored us to run in local 5Ks and half marathons. I ran my first half marathon with my favorite professor on a weekend trip to Cleveland. Being able to form connections with faculty members outside of class really enables you to get to know each other, making recommendations for future job opportunities or graduate school easy to obtain. A Day in the Life at Washington University in St. Louis
A Day in the Life at Washington University in St. Louis The tutors behind Varsity Tutors are not just here to teach theyre sharing their college experiences as well. Sarah is currently a senior at Washington University in St. Louis studying Philosophy, Neuroscience, and Psychology. She specializes ina multitude of subjects including SAT prep tutoring, ACT prep tutoring, Physics tutoring, and Writing tutoring. See what she had to say about her school: VT: Describe the campus setting and transportation options. How urban or safe is the campus? Are there buses or do you need a car/bike? Sarah: It's very easy to get around campus for most students. It's possible to walk from one end of campus to the other in under ten minutes. The main campus is very flat, and there are many walkways so students can take more efficient routes. Bikes are common, and there are plenty of bike racks. There's also Campus Circ, a bus that students can take to get around campus. It is generally on time and is used by many students. VT: How helpful are the academic advisers? Sarah: Each freshman is assigned an academic advisor at the beginning of their first semester. These advisors are usually deans, and are especially useful when one needs general information or advice about scheduling, courses, or teachers. They also help students lay out a four-year plan to ensure that all requirements are met for graduation. After students choose a major, they are assigned a major advisor who can provide more specialized insight. Generally, these advisors are quite available and willing to help when students seek advice. VT: How would you describe the dorm life? Sarah: The dorms are really nice- they're clean, spacious, and (with the exception of a couple of dorms) recently renovated. Maids clean common areas within suites on at least a weekly basis. Students can request singles, doubles, or triples, and there are accommodations for special needs. The dorms have large common rooms, as well as study rooms, and are conveniently located. Some suites have balconies, many have Tempurpedic beds. They're generally considered to be luxurious. VT: Which majors/programs are best represented and supported? Sarah: Wash U's most popular majors include Biomedical Engineering, Biology, Philosophy-Neuroscience-Psychology, Anthropology, and Mechanical Engineering. BME, PNP, and Biology are especially well-supported. VT: How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Sarah: There are a lot of summer programs for pre-frosh that make it quite easy to make friends before the semester starts. Additionally, freshman floors are generally very close, and most people make long-lasting friendships on their floor. With the combination of the summer programs and freshman floor bonding, it's easy to branch out and make lots of friends as a freshman. VT: How helpful is the Career Center? Sarah: The Career Center can be quite helpful. It frequently holds workshops to help students find internships, work on their resumes, or learn interview skills. It's easy to make appointments and has a centrally located office. VT: How are the various study areas such aslibraries, student union, and dorm lounges? Are they over-crowded, easily available, spacious? Sarah: There are lots of study rooms in the dorms and scattered around campus. There are several larger libraries on main campus, and many of the buildings include small libraries. There are meeting rooms and classrooms that can also be used for study sessions. Many people study in dining areas both on central campus and in dorm areas. There is no shortage of study space on campus. VT: Describe the surrounding town. What kinds of outside establishments / things to do are there that make it fun, boring, or somewhere in between? To what extent do students go to the downtown area of the city versus staying near campus? Sarah: St. Louis has a lot to offer. Wash U is right next to a large park, Forest Park, that has everything from an art museum to golf to a free zoo. Many students live in an area adjacent to campus that is off of the Delmar Loop, a stretch of a few blocks that has many great restaurants, stores, bars, and a movie theatre. The larger city has tons of great attractions, such as the Arch or City Museum. VT: How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Sarah: There are about 7,000 undergraduates. I usually know one or two people in each of my classes, and always run into a few people when walking around campus. However, its big enough that there are tons of new people to meet. It's a great compromise between familiar and new. VT: Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one youregretthe most. Sarah: I took General Chemistry my freshman year. The professor was great, a really talented teacher whose enthusiasm for teaching was obvious in his classes. The first day of class, he called on individual people by name from the audience of over 300 students. One of his last classes fell just before the holidays, and he came in that day in a Santa suit. Even though the course is over, he still greets many of his former students. In addition to these things, I found the course incredibly valuable as it really pushed me to work harder and allowed me to realize that I was capable of handling the level of difficulty presented by the class. 5 Singing Auditions Gone Wrong - And How to Bounce Back
5 Singing Auditions Gone Wrong - And How to Bounce Back Suzy S. Weve all had one at some point or another a bad audition. You prepare like crazy for that singing competition that you swear up and down youre going to nail. However, despite 30 minutes of scales first thing in the morning and an entire day in line spent practicing, you walk into the audition with your head held oh-so-high only to walk out feeling like your head was handed back to you on a lovely silver platter. Below are a few singers who didnt quite measure up to the singing competition they auditioned for. No worries though there is something to take away from each of these auditions that have gone horribly, horribly wrong. The Singing Souls What they lack in vocal quality, they sure make up for in confidence. They might say anybody can outsell the Spice Girls, but these girls really could have learned a thing or two about performing with stage presence had they had a chance to attend a Spice Girls concert. Although, the Singing Souls were most likely belting in diapers while the Spice Girls were out touring the world. Rhonetta Anybody can learn how to sing, but anybody cant be like me. Unfortunately, if youre going to want to compete with JLo and Mariah on the charts, youre going to need to know how to sing. One out of two aint bad, eh Rhonetta? J Star Valentine Picking the right audition song can make or break your audition. Hes definitely got the look, but sometimes you just have to stick to what you know. Mary Roach The moral of this story: if all your friends tell you that youre a great singer get a second professional opinion. Qualtrel Daan Smith Looks can be highly deceiving. OK, so this audition wasnt actually that bad at all. We wouldnt suggest auditioning for a singing competition in this outfit, but Qualtrel captured the essence of what it means to get up on stage and own your performance. Baby, you were born this way! All jokes aside, an audition gone wrong is merely a practice test better preparing us for our final exam. Every singer loves a good singing competition, but not every singing competitor knows how to sing. Like Rhonetta said, though, anyone can sing. Prepare your material months in advance, set aside plenty of time to practice every day, and power through your audition with confidence and poise. You may find yourself in the middle of an audition that has suddenly gone south, but if you buckle down, re-focus and remain true to yourself, you can show those judges just how determined you are to win, and you may be able to bounce right back up like our superstar in the making, Qualtrel! Academic versus Conversational Vocabulary Differences
Academic versus Conversational Vocabulary Differences Vocabulary Differences Arranged by Parts of Speech There are extensive linguistic differences between different registers of English (Biber et al., 1999, p.9). Academic and conversational registers reveal a complementary frequency distribution of vocabulary and grammatical forms. Some of the principle differences are as follows: Vocabulary Differences Arranged by Parts of Speech Nouns Conversation has a lower density of information and therefore fewer nouns (Biber et al, 1999, p. 66). 60% of lexical words in academic prose are nouns (p. 65). Plural nouns are used 3-4 times more in academic prose than conversation (p. 291). Nominalization is much more common in academic prose than other registers, especially â"tion and -ity (p. 322). Adjectives Adjectives are least common in conversation and most common in academic prose, The comparative form is used three times more often in academic prose than in conversation. Conversely, superlatives are more common in conversation than in academic prose (p. 65). Pronouns Conversation is marked by a high frequency of pronouns and a low frequency of nouns (p. 1042). The words everybody, everyone, everything, somebody, anybody, anyone, anything, and nobody are common in conversation but rare in academic writing. Conversation uses pronouns in anaphoric expressions (to refer to an already established idea), whereas academic writing uses definite noun phrases in anaphoric expressions (p. 266). Preposition+which relativizers are only common in academic prose (p. 625). Determiners The determiner that is 11 times more common in conversation than in academic writing, where it is relatively rare. This, used as a determiner, is more common in academic writing than in conversation, occurring 2500 versus 1500 times. The big exception is with the phrase this one which occurs 3000 times in the conversation corpus and not at all in the academic written corpus. Verbs Conversation has shorter clauses, and so verbs and adverbs are much more frequent in conversation and fiction (because it contains quoted speech) and much less frequent in academic prose (p. 65). Certain verbs are particularly common in conversation and particularly rare in academic prose: try, buy, put, pay, bring, meet, play, run, eat, watch, pick, wear. Negation is most common in conversation and least common in academic prose (p. 159). Only in conversation is the progressive used to emphasize the reported message itself as in, âShe was sayingâ¦â (p. 1120). Across all registers, 85% of verbs are tensed, while 15% of verbs are modal constructions (p. 456). Modals are most common in conversation and are about half as common in academic prose (p. 456). The progressive aspect is more common in conversation than in academic prose. The present perfect is about 30% more common in conversation than in academic prose (p. 461). Have/has got is the most common present perfect verb in an y register, occurring over 1000 times per million words in conversation, but less than 20 times per million words in academic prose (p. 465) Coordinators âButâ is more frequent in conversation and fiction, and less frequent in academic prose. âAndâ is more frequent in academic and fiction than conversation and news. In conversation, âandâ is used as a clause level connector. In academic prose, and is used as a phrase level connector (p. 81) . Contractions Verbs and not are contracted most frequently in conversation and fiction. Verbs are contracted less than 2.5% of the time in academic prose, and not is contracted 5% or less. (p. 1132) Adverbials The word since is used to introduce a reason in academic prose 95% of the time, but it is used to indicated a point in in time in all other registers (p. 848). The word while is used for concession in 80% of occurrences in academic prose, but it is used for time references 100% of occurrences in conversation (p. 849). The word though is used primarily as a linking adverbial in conversation but as a subordinator in written registers (p. 850). Clauses Expressions like see if, wonder if, know if and ask if are common in conversation and rare in academic prose. Know whether is 8 times more common in conversation than in academic writing. Determine whether, the most common post predicate wh-clause in academic prose, occurs 20 times in academic writing and not at all in conversation (p. 692-693). References Biber, D., S. Johansson, G.
